Steve Buscemi Worked Tirelessly at Ground Zero and Nobody Knew

Steve Buscemi, widely known as a Hollywood actor, returned to his roots as a New York City firefighter in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Before rising to fame, Buscemi served with FDNY’s Engine 55 in Manhattan from 1980 to 1984.

On September 12, 2001, just one day after the attacks, Buscemi quietly returned to his old firehouse in Little Italy. Without cameras or fanfare, he donned his gear and joined his fellow firefighters on the front lines at Ground Zero, working grueling 12-hour shifts. He helped dig through rubble, search for survivors, and recover the bodies of civilians and fallen first responders.

Buscemi never sought recognition. For years, his heroic acts remained largely unknown because he believed his service was about loyalty, brotherhood, and answering the call of duty, not publicity. His actions remain a profound example of courage and humility in the face of tragedy.
