Detroit Zoo Welcomes Adorable Baby Wallaby for the First Time in 11 Years

Visitors at Detroit Zoo are celebrating a truly heartwarming moment after an adorable baby wallaby made its very first public appearance. The tiny joey is especially important because it marks the zoo’s first wallaby birth in 11 years.

Wallabies are often compared to kangaroos because of their similar appearance, but these smaller marsupials have a unique charm of their own. Native to Australia, wallabies spend most of their time grazing on grass, leaves, bark, fruits, and twigs.

The Detroit Zoo is home to three red-necked wallabies named Eloise, Sprocket, and Mac. In October 2020, Eloise became a first-time mother when she gave birth to a tiny joey. Like all baby wallabies, the newborn immediately climbed into its mother’s pouch to continue developing safely.

For several months, visitors could only catch tiny glimpses of the joey hidden inside Eloise’s pouch. Now, the little one has finally started hopping around the Australian Outback Adventure habitat, delighting zoo guests and staff alike.

The joey joins a lively group that already includes 13 red kangaroos and two other wallabies. Zoo staff have not yet determined whether the baby is male or female because young joeys spend much of their early life tucked safely inside the pouch.

According to the zoo’s mammal care team, Eloise has been an excellent and protective mother. Baby wallabies are born extremely tiny and underdeveloped, relying completely on their mother’s pouch for warmth, protection, and nourishment during their first months of life.

It usually takes around six months before a joey develops enough fur and confidence to spend more time outside the pouch. Even then, young wallabies frequently return to their mother for comfort and safety.

For visitors, watching the joey slowly explore the habitat has become one of the zoo’s most exciting attractions. After more than a decade without a wallaby birth, this tiny marsupial has brought plenty of joy and excitement to animal lovers of all ages.
