When Moyo was only a few days old, she became separated from her herd. Lost and frightened, the tiny elephant wandered alone until she was discovered by a group of rangers.
The rangers brought Moyo to a wildlife-rescue organization in Zimbabwe called Wild Is Life, based in Harare. There, its founder Roxy Danckwerts took Moyo under her care. From that moment, Roxy became Moyo’s new mother and the helpless orphan found safety.
Though extremely small and vulnerable upon arrival, Moyo grew stronger under Roxy’s care. Over time, the two formed a deep bond inseparable and full of trust.
Even as Moyo grew bigger, her attachment to Roxy remained clear. She followed Roxy everywhere: inside the sanctuary, around the grounds even into the house. Their relationship became a remarkable example of compassion, trust, and the special bond that can form between humans and animals.
Their story shows how a simple act of rescue can turn a moment of fear and loneliness into hope, love, and a second chance at life.
