Gaiola Island sits in the Gulf of Naples near Posillipo, known for its beauty and its mysterious reputation. The island is made of two small islets connected by a narrow stone bridge, and stories of bad luck surrounding former owners have added to its mystique, though they are most likely coincidence.
Beneath the clear water lie the remains of an ancient Roman villa, once belonging to a member of Rome’s elite. Shaped by erosion and shifts in the landscape, these submerged structures give the island an added layer of fascination.
Today, Gaiola Island forms part of the Gaiola Submarine Park, a protected marine reserve filled with diverse sea life and archaeological remains. It draws divers, researchers and visitors who come to explore both its natural beauty and its history.
